The short answer

Android’s normal Dark theme may not recolor a PDF page. For a temporary whole-screen effect, use Settings → Accessibility → Color and motion → Color inversion; on Galaxy devices, look under Accessibility → Vision enhancements. For a file that remains dark elsewhere, create a converted copy in your browser.

Choose between Android Dark theme and Color inversion

Android distinguishes between a dark system theme and color inversion. Dark theme applies to supported interfaces; color inversion applies to everything on the display, including media. That broader reach makes inversion more likely to affect a white PDF page, but photographs and app colors can look wrong.

Temporary method: Android Color inversion

  1. Open your Android device Settings app.
  2. Tap on Accessibility.
  3. Under Color and motion, select Color inversion.
  4. Turn on Use color inversion. Add its accessibility shortcut if you expect to toggle it frequently.

Trade-off: This reverses the whole display, including images and other apps. Google notes that color quality or legibility can be affected.

Samsung Galaxy path

Samsung places the option under Settings → Accessibility → Vision enhancements → Color inversion. Names can vary by model, carrier, and One UI version.

Play Books is useful—but check the document type

Google Play Books can store uploaded PDF and EPUB files across signed-in devices. Its lighting and color controls are documented for most ebooks, but options vary by book and an original-page PDF may not behave like reflowable EPUB text. Confirm the PDF page itself changes before depending on the setting.

Create a portable copy without changing the whole phone

  1. Open the PDF dark mode tool in Chrome or another modern browser.
  2. Choose the document and start with Comfortable Dark; use OLED only if you genuinely prefer maximum contrast.
  3. Inspect photos and charts in the preview.
  4. Download the new PDF, then open it in your usual Android reader.

Keep the original

The converted output is currently rasterized. Search, selectable text, form fields, links, and annotations from the source are not retained.
