How to View PDFs in Dark Mode in Firefox

Understand Firefox PDF viewer themes, temporary display options, and when to create a separate dark PDF for other devices.

The short answer

Firefox includes a capable PDF.js viewer, but Mozilla’s current viewer documentation does not promise a built-in control that recolors every PDF page. If the toolbar is dark and the page is still white, use a temporary display inversion or create a dark copy for a consistent result across devices.

What Firefox’s built-in PDF viewer actually changes

Firefox opens most PDFs in its built-in viewer automatically. That viewer handles page navigation, zoom, presentation mode, annotations, and other document controls. A dark browser theme can change the surrounding interface without rewriting the colors stored in the PDF page.

Do not confuse these three layers

  • Firefox theme: changes tabs, toolbars, menus, and browser chrome.
  • Page display effect: changes only what you see on the current screen.
  • Converted PDF: creates a second file whose rendered pages use the selected palette.

A dependable Firefox workflow

  1. Keep the original PDF open in Firefox for reference.
  2. Open the dark mode converter in another tab.
  3. Choose a reading preset and compare the first page in the split preview.
  4. Check pages with photographs, code blocks, charts, and faint gray text.
  5. Download the converted copy and reopen it in Firefox before relying on it.

Firefox shows an error or blank page?

Download the PDF first and open the local copy. If it still fails, the file may be encrypted, malformed, or using a feature the browser viewer does not support. Try the original in a desktop PDF reader before converting it.
